Italy’s new Road Code is now officially in effect
Italy’s new Road Code is now officially in effect, bringing with it significant changes aimed at improving safety for both drivers and pedestrians. However, the new law, n. 177/2024, has not been welcomed by everyone.
Key Changes:
Drugs and Alcohol:
While the current limits for blood alcohol levels remain unchanged, repeat offenders will be required to install an “alcolock” device, which prevents the vehicle from starting if alcohol above the legal limit is detected. Additionally, individuals found under the influence of drugs face severe consequences, including license revocation and a suspension of up to three years.
Mobile Phones:
Drivers caught using phones while driving will face fines ranging from €250 to €1,000, a deduction of 10 points from their license and a one-week suspension. For repeat offenders fines can rise to €1,400, and the suspension period may extend to three months. If phone usage causes an accident, the suspension may increase to six months.
Speeding:
Drivers exceeding speed limits by between 10 and 40 km/h will face fines ranging from €173 to €880.
Abandonment of Animals:
Offenders guilty of abandoning animals can face a license suspension or revocation lasting six months to one year. If the abandonment leads to injury or death, penalties may include imprisonment for two to seven years.
Scooters:
All scooters, including small electric ones, will now require license plates and insurance. Helmets will be mandatory for drivers.
